Museum Riverton Rocks - Is the name of the Peninsula which just out to the sea beyond the harbour mouth. Its 9km length has many beautiful beaches for walking, surfing, swimming or picnicking. Walks Mores Reserve at the top of Richard Street, offers several short (10-30 minute) walks & great views over Southland & Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island. A longer (2-3 hr) walk starts here and follows the coast to Taramea (Howells Point) Te Wai Korari Wetland Reserve near the town boundary on the Riverton-Invercargill highway, tracks wind through the wetland reserve to the estuary. Taramea (Howells Point) reserve is at the end of Rocks Highway, a large open grass & flax area offering walking, beaches, picnic spots and views to Invercargill, Bluff and Stewart Island. From Howells Memorial (above the river mouth) a track follows the beach side to Taramea (Howells Point) - about 1 hour. Longhilly walk - A short round trip of about and hour, or longer forest walks following old water races from Gold mining times. Off Highway 99 past Colac Bay.
